Acid-Fast Staining Revisited, a Dated but Versatile Means of Diagnosis

Acid-fast staining has been utilized in the field of medicine since late 1800s. It was, for a while, considered gold standard diagnosing leprosy and tuberculosis. Principally it uses 1 primary agent, carbol fuchsin; methylene blue as counter stain. The emergence molecular-based diagnostic tests makes some us question relevance acid-fast daily practice. This literature review aimed to revisit method, its uses, modification that occurred throughout years.
